About the Department

The Department of Chinese Studies was established as an independent unit at the Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology (FCMP) at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in 2018. The Chinese Studies Program (BP and MP) was established in 1991, while teaching Chinese at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” began early in 1953 and was conducted by the famous Chinese linguist and intellectual Prof. Zhu Dexi and Senior Lecturer Zhang Songfeng, who developed the methodology and compiled the first textbooks for teaching Chinese in Bulgaria. During the period from 1991 to 2018, Chinese Studies Program was a part of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures.

The academic staff of the Department in 2021 includes eight full-time and four part-time lecturers, as well as two guest lecturers from China. The Department of Chinese Studies is accredited to conduct training in all three academic degrees in higher education - Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degree in 2.1 Philology (Chinese language and literature).

The Department provides a Bachelor’s Program in Chinese Studies, Master’s Program in “Intercultural Communication and Translation with Chinese and Bulgarian Language”, as well as three Doctoral Programs in “Modern Chinese Language”, “Chinese Language” and “Chinese Language, History and Culture”.

The teaching staff of the Chinese Studies Department actively participates in research and development activities, regularly organizes international academic forums, participates in academic exchange programs and international seminars and lectures, implements an active publishing and research plan.
