The main objective of the Bachelor's Program in Chinese Studies at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” is education of Chinese philologists. The students acquire a wide range of complex theoretical knowledge of the Chinese civilization in synchronic and diachronic terms, all while receiving a solid understanding of Chinese language. Students are being educated in accordance with the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), which is a prerequisite for their future mobility within the European Union and everywhere else where this credit system is acknowledged.
The Bachelor’s Degree Program covers eight semesters and includes compulsory theoretical subjects on Chinese language, literature, history and civilization, as well as comprehensive sinology studies. Students begin learning Chinese at an elementary level, with a total workload of 1680 academic hours for the entire period of education. Along with the specialized disciplines in Chinese studies, general education courses are included, which build the necessary framework of philological education. The Program offers a wide range of elective courses covering various fields of humanities and Chinese studies. Those who have chosen the pedagogical training module can acquire the professional qualification
“philologist-expert, teacher in Chinese language”.
The Bachelor’s Program in Chinese Studies prepares experts in Modern and Classical Chinese language, Chinese linguistics, literature and culture, Chinese civilization and history of China. Graduates of the program are fluent in written and spoken Chinese, they have all the necessary knowledge and skills for oral communication with native speakers of Mandarin Chinese, they have acquired the competence to read and translate texts of various genres and have obtained basic skills needed for consecutive translation from and into Chinese. Students who have completed the Bachelor’s Degree can further expand their studies in the academic programs of Master’s and Doctoral Degree.
